Dreamlight Theatre Company was founded in 2006 as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization; the simple goal was to create a home for Musical Theatre – a place where artists and audiences alike would find a dedication to artistry and storytelling.
Dreamlight’s inaugural production opened in March, 2007 – a bold re-envisioning of the musical, Avenue X. The production was barren – almost naked. An empty stage kept the focus on the human element of the show; the rich lighting design gave the piece a cinematic feel and helped draw attention to the theatricality of watching an “a cappella” musical. The result was a breathtaking production of which Dreamlight will always be proud. The show enjoyed a sold out run at The 45th Street Theatre and was fortunate enough to receive reviews in Backstage and Variety, both of which applauded the virtuosity of the talented cast and the creativity exhibited by the show's producing team. The following season, Dreamlight produced the world premiere of Fugitive Songs - an original song cycle by Nathan Tysen and Chris Miller. After nearly a year of readings and workshops, the show opened in March, 2008 and picked up Dreamlight’s first Drama Desk Nomination. It was directed by Joe Calarco and featured an exceptional five-member cast; perhaps most noticeably, it marked the company’s first original musical.
Dreamlight also presents an ongoing concert series called "Bright Lights" to showcase the work of up-and-coming composers and lyricists writing for the musical theatre. The concerts are hosted four times a year and fulfill a key part of the mission - to provide support for emerging artists so that they may continue to develop and grow. Past participants have included Jeff Blumenkrantz, Neil Bartram & Brian Hill, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, Georgia Stitt, Ricky Ian Gordan, Sam Davis, and J. Oconer Navarro.
At the moment, Dreamlight is developing two original musicals and lining up support for the next three seasons. Already, the company is carving out a presence here in New York City, and we believe people are beginning to feel the excitement of a company that is dedicated to this unique American artform: Musical Theatre. We're excited to continue our evolution, and look forward to seeing where the journey takes us. |
